For instance, having a strong opinion on a specific topic may deter you from thinking more critically, and therefore the research might end up being one-sided. It is a good idea to pick a topic in which you can provide a good argument for both sides of the societal issue.

Write: The first step in the research process is selecting a topic that is both interesting and manageable. For this discussion:

  • Review the Final Research Project instructions in Week Five, and identify two potential research topics. Keep in mind that you will choose just one for the Week Three Annotated Bibliography assignment and the Final Research Project.
  • Describe methods to use in identifying and narrowing your research paper topic.

Education and the good life

Much debate has been presented on the status of education in this country. With the continuing deteriorating state of the economy, fear of funding cuts has moved to the forefront of this discussion as universities (both public and private), school districts, and extracurricular programs face the reality of budget slashing. But this is clearly not the only issue in the wide topic of education. Central to the argument is always the various perspectives of how people should be educated. Write a paper exploring what it means (i.e. a definitional essay) to be educated and to use that education in life and/or the workforce. In other words, how is education important to achieving “the good life”? This paper will challenge you to define the concept of education and to incorporate disciplinary knowledge from the experts and theorists of a certain major or field of study. For this paper, you are trying to study the concept of education and learning from the perspective of a particular discipline: · A biological explanation of how learning takes place at the neuro-chemical level · A linguistic and/or philosophical understanding of the various meanings of education · A social analysis of the benefits (or disadvantages) to formal education, including public/private school, homeschooling, standardized testing, etc. · A historical treatment of how people were formally educated within a particular civilization · A literary essay examining the treatment of education in at least one major work. · An economic essay describing how class and money plays into education · Another disciplinary analysis must be approved by the instructor. Will you argue that education occurs as the result of endorphins, and if so, what triggers those endorphins? Each of the possible topics includes an ethical component that you will address in your handout.

This handout will target parent education on developmentally appropriate expectations for the age group you have chosen and give specific health and safety tips including environmental considerations. In addition you will write a short description of ethical considerations that may arise when discussing this topic with parents.

After reviewing the required resources, identify and discuss three challenges involved with ensuring that teaching strategies are appropriate for culturally diverse children. Then, discuss these cultural challenges in the classroom using one sociological perspective (i.e., functionalism, conflict theory, symbolic interactionism, etc.) and another relevant perspective, such as Piaget’s preoperational stage of development. Finally, identify and discuss how the challenges related to differences in culture may be addressed by a teacher in a way that increases the child’s cognitive advancement and academic success.
