Geography homework help

1. The policies of both Import-Substitution Industrialization and Neoliberalism strongly influenced the urban geography of Latin America, but in profoundly different ways. First, differentiate between the two policies and then compare and contrast their effects on urban areas, including the distribution of cities as well as what is occurring within cities. Be sure to include ALL of the following terms/concepts in your answer: urban growth, overurbanization, urban primacy, informal sector (housing and employment), squatter settlements/favelas, privatization, gender and secondary cities. When using these terms, be sure they are put in bold. If not, points will be deducted.
2. On p. 94, Klak states that “Sustainable Development has become a universal goal in recent years”. Discuss what is meant by sustainable development, both culturally and environmentally, followed by a discussion of how that goal is threatened or enabled by various activities within the region such as an expanding export economy, tourism in its various forms (be sure you incorporate at least 3 forms of tourism in this discussion), and drug production. Lastly, do you feel that the gradual transition away from neoliberalism would improve or deter the region’s sustainability efforts? Why (be as specific as possible)?
Each answer should be 2-3 pages, single-spaced. Late assignments will NOT be accepted under any circumstances.

deforestation vs population growth

deforestation vs population growth

For a major part of your grade, you are going to research and complete an environmental issues paper. This will help you build the skills necessary to develop an informed opinion and present that opinion in written form. This project will serve as a final assessment for the course by analyze a controversial environmental issue of your choosing. You must examine the pros, cons, compromises, and tradeoffs of the issue by gathering credible information from various sources and assess the scientific credibility of the information. You will then develop from this information a well thought out paper that will address the major players involved, relevant cited facts, and a clearly identified opinion.

The topic of the paper is deforestation vs population growth. Use a minimum of 6 sources. The final paper should be double-spaced, 12 point, and 7 to 8 pages in length with citations in APA format. Anytime you use the writings or ideas of others as though they were your own, you are plagiarizing (even if you paraphrase). All information and ideas that are not a part of general knowledge must be cited. When in doubt, cite!

Your final paper should address the following key points:

  • The Controversy: Identify the controversy
  • The Major Players: Who is involved? Why are they involved?
  • Important Facts: State relevant facts concerning the issue. Try to separate fact from opinion. Try not to show your own bias. Properly use APA citations
  • Side One: Arguments; state briefly and cite your sources
  • Side Two: Arguments; state briefly and cite your sources
  • Your Opinion and Rationale: I believe that…, We should…, I feel that… Use supporting arguments and rationale. What arguments would you use to present to those who disagree with you? Cite all of your sources.
  • References: Alphabetize your sources. Make sure there are sources representing both sides of the issue.

Population pyramids show the age structure of the population of a country or region. Different growth patterns caused by varying cultural values, war events or both help shape the pyramid. You will obtain the data (population pyramids) from for three different countries. The three countries (Ethiopia, Indonesia and UK) will each have a population pattern that may be recognized as either in rapid growth, in stable growth or in growth decline. After you obtain the pyramids, copy and paste them into your assignment and then identify which of the three patterns each country demonstrates. Please write a brief essay comparing the three pyramids. Consider historical events, the present global population structure and the influence, if any, of the past and
the present on future population growth. Compare and contrast these pyramids. Which country will have the greatest population increase? Why? What problems might these countries be facing? You may use additional information from library sources or the Internet.
Please cite any outside sources used to prepare your essay, and provide a bibliography at end of your assignment.

Investigate A Dam Disaster

Investigate ONE dam disaster that occurred due to the geologic setting in which it was constructed.  Write in less one page a discussion describing the disaster and the lessons learned from it.  Be sure to address each of the following:

  1. In a few sentences describe the basic details of the dam (e.g. height, width at base, width at crest, material with which it was constructed) and the purpose of construction.
  2. In a few sentences, describe how the dam failed. What was the failure mechanism? Were people killed? Was there property damage?
  3. In a paragraph, describe the geologic setting:
  4. What type of rock was the dam constructed on (igneous, metamorphic or sedimentary?)
  5. Were there any features in the geologic formations that controlled construction or led to the failure (e.g. faults, joints, weathering, landslides)
  6. What were the lessons learned from the failure?
  7. Cite all of the web pages or other sources you used in your research.

A few examples of dams that failed due to geologic setting are listed below, with suggested starting points for research.  If you would like to investigate a different dam, that’s fine, as long as the disaster was due to the geologic setting (not faulty design or construction).

Monitoring Our Home Planet

The Internet is a powerful tool that provides the ability to monitor natural phenomena and disasters that happen all over planet Earth.

In this assignment, you will research resources available on the Internet for monitoring natural phenomena including earthquakes, volcanoes, tsunamis, global climate, and weather.

Based on your research, do the following:

  • Identify a minimum of three different natural phenomena that are typically responsible for natural disasters. Analyze the potential impact of these disasters.
  • Analyze how these phenomenon are monitored, or not, via the Internet. Critique available Web sites, which publicly display up-to-date monitored information related to each of the natural phenomena you have identified. Focus on the following aspects:
    • Geography
      • What parts of the world are potentially affected by these phenomena? Specifically identify the countries.
    • Resources
      • What kinds of resources are allocated toward monitoring these phenomena and why?
      • What types of Web resources monitor the phenomena and provide up-to-date information about them?
      • What kinds of technology are involved in monitoring the phenomena?
    • Politics
      • What political ramifications would this disaster-preparedness technology cause between more-developed countries and less-developed countries?
      • What kinds of issues could this technology cause between less-developed countries?
    • Economics
      • How would this technology directly impact the economies of those countries that have the technology versus those countries that do not?
      • Do you predict any indirect impacts? What current evidence supports your position?
    • Disaster Preparedness
      • What types of systems are in place in terms of disaster preparedness related to these monitored phenomena?
  • Summarize your findings. Evaluate how this technology will impact the future of humanity, both positively and negatively. Be sure to consider the political and economic issues discussed in your future predictions.

Support your statements with examples. Use a minimum of six reliable references, two of which should be peer-reviewed articles.

Write a 7–8-page paper in Word format. Apply APA standards to citation of sources

Geography homework

Given your new found perspective as a geographer, compare two places that, while distant from each other, share similarity in some aspect of their physical geography. The two locations can be local (where you live), somewhere that you have only visited once or twice, or somewhere you would like to visit someday. Feel free to use any concepts from this course, such as weather, seasons, water resources, terrain, etc. You can use outside references, as

long as you cite them using any standard citation style (endnotes, footnotes, MLA, etc).

A Current Global Issue – Climate Change

Man-made and natural disasters

You are concerned about the growing number of international man-made and natural disasters. You are looking for information as to what you can do to assist the victims of these disasters monetarily and operationally, and to help rebuild infrastructure in the affected areas.

Use the Internet and Strayer library to research ongoing disasters and crises which you predict will continue to cause international challenges over the next ten (10) years.

Create an eight to ten (8-10) slide PowerPoint presentation in which you:

  1. Select one (1) current man-made or natural disaster or crisis with international effects or implications. Analyze at least three (3) reasons why the disaster / crisis in question may cause continuing international challenges.
  2. Determine two (2) specific international government-affiliated or nonprofit organizations with the ability to assist victims of your selected disaster or crisis. Explain the nature of the role of each of these organizations in providing aid to the victims who were affected by your selected disaster or crisis.
  3. Speculate on two (2) obstacles that could thwart your identified organizations’ abilities to respond successfully to the selected disaster or crisis. Provide a rationale for your response.
  4. Suggest one (1) way in which one (1) of your selected organizations could utilize a public-private partnership to assist in emergency preparedness and planning if the selected disaster or crisis were to occur again in the future. Provide a rationale for your response.
  5. Use at least three (3) quality references. Note: Wikipedia and other related websites do not qualify as academic resources.

Your assignment must follow these formatting requirements:

  • Format the slides of the PowerPoint presentation using headings on each slide (Arial size 32 font), bullet points highlighting the most important information for each topic (Arial size 20-24 font), and relevant, clear graphics where applicable. Check with your professor for any additional instructions.
  • Format the Notes section of each slide using full paragraphs (Times New Roman size 12 font).
