Written Assignment – Separation of Church and State

Luther is perhaps best known for starting the Protestant Reformation when he nailed his 95 Theses to a church door. With this action, he directly challenged the power and position of the church in society.

Calvin essentially continued the work of Luther and helped spread the Reformation to other parts of Europe. Calvin believed in an explicit and literal interpretation of the Bible, but also believed in the strength of the individual to be good and follow God’s law. He was also critical of the Catholic Church and its influence at the time.

Machiavelli, often considered one of the founders of political science, is most famous for his work, The Prince, which is essentially an instruction manual for how a tyrant should rule. He wrote The Prince after being exiled by the Medici. His other work, the Discourses on Livy describes the advantages of a Republic. Both have had profound influences on the modern world.

ASSIGNMENT

Earlier we examined Augustine and Aquinas, both of which had great influence on the role of the Church in government. With Reformists like Calvin and Luther, the role was further defined. Write a 2 page paper in which you analyze the role of religion and its influence on the state in one of the following modern (within the past 20 years) countries: Iran, Iraq, USA..

This paper should be 2 pages of complete content (cover page and reference page are separate) and have in-text citations. The paper will be in APA style (both in formatting the paper and reference page). One scholarly article as a minimum should be included in the paper.

The Godless Constitution

Address the following questions concerning the question of whether the U.S. Constitution is secularist or does it allow for a degree of intermingling between the religious and governmental sphere. The paper is to be approximately 10-12 pages in length (double spaced) except for long quotations (4 lines or more). You may use any of the materials covered in the course. Any footnote style is acceptable. Tentatively the paper is due at the end of the final examination period. We will be more exact when the registrar gives us a date for submission of grades but aim for the last week in December. Was the Constitution “godless”? Historian Isaac Kramnick and law professor John Witte present contrasting views. Walter Berns (“Constitutionalism and the Religious Problem”) places the issue of the secular versus the religious bases of the American Founding in the context of the battle between the “ancients and moderns” in political philosophy. Explain these perspectives and some of the principal thinkers involved. Berns and Kramnick focus on Locke. Present Locke’s basic position on role of religion in society. Berns ties Locke’s solution to the commercial republic. Explain its bearing on the religious problem. What types of evidence does Kramnick marshal to support his secularist reading of the Constitution? Develop the thought of Jefferson and Madison in this regard. How does Witte’s Religion and the American Constitutional Experiment (“The First Amendment Religion Clauses”) counter Kramnick’s secularist interpretation? Develop his argument. Include a note on federalism, incorporation, and the state constitutional experience your essay. How does the church-issue reverberate in contemporary American constitutional law? How do the Virginians (Madison and Jefferson loom so large in American Constitutional Law? Compare Hugo Black’s majority opinion in Everson v. Board of Eduction (1947) with Chief Justice Rehnquist’s dissent in Wallace v. Jaffree (1985) on the religion clauses of the First Amendment and their intellectual foundations and meaning. Chapters 8 and 9 in Fowler et al. might be useful here.

Flannery O'Connor Religion

How does religion figure into Flannery O’Connor’s stories? Flannery O’Connor: “Good Country People”, “A Good Man is Hard to Find”, and “Everything That Rises Must Converge” PLEASE NOTE: This course is all about writing analytical papers that require documentation from primary sources, i.e., footnotes/endnotes/in-text notation, etc. You cannot write an analytical/research paper without refering to sources, because you have to back up or support any claim you make by lifting quotes from your sources. English 200 is the course where you must get used to using footnotes, endnotes, etc. The Little Seagull Handbook will show you how to do footnotes, endnotes, etc. and I highly recommend that you purchase it. If you already have The MLA Handbook (from The Modern Language Association Handbook), you can consult it. Some Rules: 1 – All papers will have the student’s name and Eng 369 on the first page only. A title page is not necessary. 2 – All papers will be double-spaced and paginated. If the paper is an analytical or reseach paper, it will always have a bibliography page at the end of the paper. Page length minimums do not include the Bibliography or Sources Consulted page. 3) – There will be no spacing between paragraphs. This is important. Microsoft Word, which most of you use, was designed for writing letters in business, not esssays in college, where each paragraph is meant to stand out with an extra space separating each paragraph. Not so in the Humanities, where continuity is the rule. There is thus a default command that you must TURN OFF in Word. I don’t know what that command is but if you use Word on either a PC or Mac, you must turn off the spacing-between-paragraphs command. 4) All assignments absolutely must be saved in a file format that computer can open and read. I only accept papers whose file format is either .docx, or .doc or as a .wpd (WordPerfect file). And always .rtf (Rich Text formatting) is accepted. NO .PDF files. Remember, if I can’t open it, you don’t get credit for it.

Narcissistic Leadership Project Instructions

Others say that the damage done by narcissistic leaders and leadership creates an unethical environment that is virtually irreparable. What is narcissistic leadership? What are the traits of a covenant leader?
For this project, compare and contrast the traits of a narcissistic leader with that of a covenant leader. What is the organizational impact of a narcissistic leader and a covenant leader? Imagine that you were a recently appointed chief of police in a large local police organization where the former police chief was not only a narcissistic leader but also promulgated narcissistic leadership qualities throughout all levels of leadership within the department. Develop a change plan in order to develop your organization with covenant leadership principles. Specifically, how would you do this in a police organization? Detail changes in your mission, small changes you may make, large changes you may make, and the potential pitfalls and successes you may realize.
Write a paper on this subject that is not less than 8–10 pages in current APA format. The page count does not include the title page, abstract, reference section, or any extra material. process by which operant conditioning can lead to the formation of a superstition.

Superstition

Operant Conditioning and Superstitions

Many people believe that superstitions are absolutely true. This often causes them to believe and act in ways that are out of the norm either to avoid a negative outcome or to bring about a positive outcome. However, the origins of all superstitions lie in operant conditioning (for example, wearing the same shirt worn during a victory game to all future games in order to ensure victory).

In this assignment, you will examine the process by which operant conditioning can lead to the formation of a superstition.

Using the module readings, the Argosy University online library resources, and the Internet, research the development of operant conditioning and its basic principles. Then, address the following:

  • Describe the historical antecedents of operant conditioning. What factors led to the rise of operant conditioning?
  • Describe the principles/concepts which can be applied to explain the process by which operant conditioning can lead to the development and maintenance of superstitions.
  • Brainstorm to come up with a number of superstitions you may have heard or read about. Using your knowledge and vocabulary of operant conditioning, choose one of these superstitions. Then, describe in detail, the thinking processes involved that resulted in the acquisition and perpetuation of this irrational belief.
  • Describe a specific aspect of the operant conditioning process that leads to these beliefs becoming so deeply ingrained and long standing in nature.
  • Explain whether a person can ever be rid of superstitions. What methods can be used to help such a person?
  • Interview a family member or friend to discover a superstition that he or she believes in. Explain the nature of the event that led to the formation of this superstition. Does this information fit with your understanding of how the operant conditioning process results in the development of superstitions? Why or why not?

Write a 3–4-page paper in Word format. The paper should be double-spaced and in 12 point, Times New Roman font with regular one-inch margins and free of typographical and grammatical errors. Apply APA standards to citation of sources. Be sure to include a title page and a reference page.
